INVASIVE SPECIES
TERRESTRIAL VEGETATION CONTROL
The current targeted species for terrestrial vegetation control is giant hogweed. This aggressive invader not only has an ecological impact, but also is a threat to human health. The sap from this invasive can induce hyper-sensitivity to sunlight and cause severe burns. The District has led a program for several years to control this noxious weed.
The District works in collaboration with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to maintain information on a number of sites in Oswego County. District staff conduct site visits at known hogweed locations to identify areas needing control. This information is used to coordinate with a qualified applicator who performs a combination of herbicide treatment and seed-head removal on an annual basis.
