INVASIVE SPECIES
AQUATIC VEGETATION CONTROL
The targeted species for aquatic vegetation control in Oswego County is the highly invasive plant species, the water chestnut (Trapa natans, L.). Chestnuts out-compete native species of plants through exponential growth due to their lack of natural predators. This aquatic invasive has severely impacted native aquatic habitats, fishing access, recreational use and economic vitality in the Oswego River, and several other tributaries of Lake Ontario within Oswego County.
In order to combat the negative impacts of this aggressive plant, both herbicide control and physical removal are used. A combination of both control measures is implemented in the Oswego River, and hand-pulling is the main technique used in other water bodies throughout the County.
