Forestry Internship Position Available for 2025

General Job Description:

This internship will involve assisting the Oswego County Soil and Water Conservation District with developing forest management plans for private landowners as well as various management activities on Oswego County Reforestation properties. Interns will be expected to assist with conducting forest inventory for the development of management plans on private properties, generate timber cruise and stand maps, summarize data and produce forest stand descriptions. The primary duties for this position on Reforestation properties will include installing signage, maintaining boundary lines, conducting regeneration surveys, conducting GPS/GIS work and potentially marking timber. There is potential for assisting with other District activities as well, such as culvert assessments, outreach/education and work associated with various grant projects. 

Typical Work Activities:

  • Plan and implement timber cruises

  • Develop stand maps and descriptions

  • Summarize inventory data

  • Conduct environmental reviews 

  • Maintenance and inventory of equipment 

  • Forest property boundary maintenance

  • Install signage

  • All other duties as assigned 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

  • Forest mensuration, silviculture and dendrology 

  • Forestland navigation

  • GIS/GPS operation

  • Self-motivated

  • Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather conditions and on uneven terrain

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of junior year in a natural resources management or forest resources management curriculum by the time the job begins. The following courses are also required: dendrology, forest mensuration, and GIS. Candidates must possess a valid NYS Driver’s license.

Length of Employment and Pay Rate:

  • Late May-August 

  • $18.00-$19.00/hr

  • Eligibility to join the NYS Retirement System
